Internal Audit Practitioner
The Internal Audit Practitioner has been designed to support new internal auditors as they take their first step toward becoming professionally qualified. When you study the IAP you will be introduced to the core elements of the International Professional Practices Framework and the International Standards.
On passing the IAP exam, you will gain the temporary designation of IAP which will allow you to enter the CIA within three years. When the three-year period elapses, you lose the IAP designation.
You must be an affiliate member of the Institute to take the IAP in the UK and Ireland.
Please note: IAP exams commence 1 March 2020.
Why do the IAP?
The IAP has been designed to simplify the application process for non-graduates to register on the CIA. If you are a graduate you can commence with the CIA immediately, but should you not hold a degree you can complete the IAP first and so fulfil all the entry requirements for the CIA.

There are no education or experience requirements for the IAP.
What you will learn
The syllabus for the IAP is divided into five syllabus domains, each dealing with a set of standards:
- Internal Audit Attributes (IIA Standard 1000, 1100, 1200)
- Nature of work (IIA Standard 2100)
- Engagement planning (IIA Standard 2200)
- Engagement work (IIA Standard 2300)
- Engagement communication (IIA Standard 2400)

What you need to pass the IAP
To pass the IAP exam you need to sit one 2-hour multiple choice exam which you can take at over 100 Pearson Vue centres in the UK and Ireland.
CIA Part 1 vs IAP
From 1 March 2020, the route to gaining the IAP will no longer be based on the CIA Part 1 exam but on a new syllabus that prepares newcomers to the profession for a career in internal audit, and provides the first step towards becoming professionally qualified.

Timescales
You can sit the IAP exam whenever you want, and you have a maximum window of 2 years to complete the IAP from the point of application.
When you pass the IAP exam, you will have 3 years to enrol on the CIA.
Transition arrangements
Students have the option of either sitting the CIA Part 1 exam before 1 March 2020 or sitting the revised IAP exam 1 March 2020.
