The CIA registration process explained, step by step

If you want to study the CIA in the UK or Ireland, you need to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). Once you're a member you can apply to take the CIA certification, which is a process managed by IIA Global.

This means you need to register with us and also with IIA Global. We're working on streamlining the process but for now, here are the steps you need to take and the information required at each stage.

CIA process 1-6 steps

1. Join the IIA

Apply for student membership – IIA membership is required to take the CIA.

If you're already a member, complete this short form to notify us of your intention to study the CIA.

2. Pay your membership invoice

We will email you an invoice for the cost of IIA membership and the CIA Learning System. Once we have received payment, you will be admitted into membership and granted access to the online learning system.

3. Receive welcome email

We will notify you of your membership number and provide login details for the IIA Global website.

4. Apply to take the CIA

You will need to apply via IIA Global's online candidate certification system and pay the subscription fee. Please read our step by step guide to using this system because it's not as user-friendly as we would like it to be.

You can pay online by card or wire transfer.

5. Upload your supporting documents

Next, you'll receive an email from IIA Global. This will ask you to upload a number of documents to support your application: photo ID, a character reference and either your education certificates or an experience record. If you do not hold a degree you will be asked for a letter of endorsement from your employer.

6. Receive confirmation of approval and start studying!

You're now registered on the CIA programme and are eligible to apply to sit the exams whenever you're ready.
