Meet the Council

Mark Lenton, CMIIA – President

As Director of Internal audit at Walgreens Boots Alliance, Mark is responsible for internal audit across retail activities in eight countries including Boots in the UK and ROI.

Formally the Head of Internal Audit & Risk for United Utilities, he has over 17 years’ experience in governance, risk management, internal control and assurance, gained from a diverse career across a range of sectors.

Mark is a Chartered Internal Auditor, chemistry graduate and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (FCMA).  


Peter Elam, CMIIA QIAL CIA – Deputy President

Peter is Group Head of Risk Management and Business Assurance at Anglo American, with 65 staff globally. He previously spent nine years as Head of Internal Audit at Novartis.

Prior to that, he spent 15 years at Shell in positions of increasing responsibility, latterly as CFO in China. 

Peter is a Chartered Internal Auditor and a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. He has an MA in history and modern languages and an MPhil in Russian and east European studies from the University of Oxford.


Paul Manning, CMIIA QIAL CIA – Immediate Past President

Paul is the Director of the Office of Internal Oversight Services at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He has over 20 years’ experience of leading in-house and outsourced internal audit functions across the commercial, public and charity sectors, in the UK and worldwide, as well as running investigations and evaluations. Paul was the CIIA’s president for 2018/19, and is currently a member of the management board of the European Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditing (ECIIA).

He previously sat on the audit panel at CIPFA, and was the Founding Chair of the intergovernmental audit and fraud round-table.


John Wood – Interim CEO

John was appointed as Interim CEO on 2 January 2020 and is currently the executive leader of the Institute on behalf of the Council, until the appointment of a Permanent CEO – which is expected mid-year.

He is an experienced CEO and Chairman who specialises in advising and leading organisations undergoing development and growth. He possesses a mixture of third sector and commercial experience.

John was formally an MD/CEO of SME’s in packaging and point of sale and, before that, worked in management consulting. He has also held various operational, technical and commercial roles in the metals and chemicals sectors.


Aidan Allcock, CMIIA QIAL CIA

Aidan is Head of Internal Audit for Arbuthnot Latham.

He has 15 years internal audit and 30 years’ financial services experience in insurance, banking and asset management environments.

Prior to becoming a chartered IIA council member, Aidan chaired the IIA Scotland Committee and was a member of the IIA International Conference Organising Committee. He has also hosted regional events on behalf of IIA East and South and was an IIA Tutor in Risk Management and Corporate Governance. 


Dermot Byrne, CMIIA QIAL CPFA MA          

Dermot is the Head of the Internal and EU Audit unit in the department of public expenditure and reform in the Republic of Ireland.

He has a master’s degree in public management and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

Dermot is a regular speaker at finance management seminars and a frequent contributor to training programmes. He previously managed the audits of various government ministries, and currently chairs the audit committees of two public sector bodies in Dublin.  


Paul Day – Director at Large

Paul is the Group Chief Internal Auditor for Lloyds Banking Group and a former Partner for Deloitte, in charge of their UK financial services and banking internal audit teams.

He has specialised in internal and external audit roles across financial services for over 20 years and has held various leadership positions at Barclays.

Paul studied at Cambridge University, holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and is a Member of the Internal Audit Panel of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.


Piyush Fatania CMIIA, QIAL, CIA

Piyush is Head of Internal Audit at St. Albans District Council, with over 28 years’ experience in both Local Government and the NHS.

As a testament to his success and leadership qualities, the internal audit team he leads were Highly Commended at the 2019 Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy Public Finance Awards.

As a member of council, he represents fellow public sector auditors by advising and supporting the Institute to increase its profile and influence in the public sector.


Moya Moore CMIIA, ACA, QIAL

As Assistant Director, Moya oversees the provision of internal audit services for a range of public sector and charity clients at SWAP. Her areas of responsibility include design, development and delivery of Agile annual plans, senior client liaison and performance management.

She is an active member of SWAP’s senior leadership team, and leads a team of geographically dispersed auditors, all the while supporting the company through informed and constructive challenges on key decisions, initiatives and strategy.


Rosie Nightingale, PIIA CIA

Rosie is a Manager in internal audit, governance, risk and compliance at PwC.  

Prior to joining PwC, she was a Senior Auditor at the Government Internal Audit Agency, and has trained with the Department for International Development Internal Audit team as a Senior Internal Auditor, leading and delivering internal audits across the globe.

Rosie has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and social policy, and a Rudolph Klein prize for social policy. She has also been awarded the Charles Duly prize by the institute.


Elizabeth Stevenson PIA, CIA, CRMA, ACAMs

Elizabeth is an experienced Internal Auditor of over 20 years, who’s worked mainly in financial services, and focused particularly on compliance and financial crime. She’s held numerous audit roles and supported compliance teams at major banking organisations.

Elizabeth possesses the audit qualifications PIIA, CIA, CRMA, along with various compliance certifications.

She’s currently an Executive Director and Audit Chief Operating Officer at SMBCE, where she has worked for the past six years.


Gary Stewart CMIIA, QIAL, ITAC

Gary is an experienced Head of Internal Audit, who uses sound judgement to provide challenging and constructive input at board level.

He entered the profession as a graduate and since then has progressed through different levels of seniority, supporting government departments and professional services companies. He’s worked for large audit teams and has also been the Trustee of an academy trust.

In his current role, Gary works closely with audit committees, facilitating workshops on risk and assurance together with executive and non-executive directors.


Sean Tompkins 

Sean Tompkins is CEO for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and a former Marketing and Distribution Director for Prudential Financial Services.

He is chiefly responsible for ensuring RICS is recognised in the key economic and political centres of the world as the leading body that sets and enforces professional standards in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure.

He is a Co-opted Director for the institute, as well as a chartered insurer, and a fellow of the Institute of Direct Marketing.


Jon Whitfield, CMIIA QIAL CIA

Jon is a CMIIA-Qualified Auditor with an MSC in internal audit and management.

In 2004, he was appointed as Head of Internal Audit for the Department for Trade and Industry, and, since then, has held down various similar roles including a Chief Executive position for the Government Internal Audit Agency.

Jon was awarded a CBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List for Services to Government Audit and is a co-opted director of the institute.


Peter Wood, CMIIA

Peter is the Director of Internal Audit and assurance at the UK National Audit Office.

Originally a CIPFA-qualified Accountant, he’s worked for top firms including Baker Tilly and Arthur Andersen, helping build up their internal audit profiles.

He has a degree in economics and is a member of the CIIA, having qualified via the chartered by experience route.

Peter has worked across a range of business sectors including financial services and retail.


Paddy Padmanathan – Interim CFO

Paddy, in his interim role, is responsible for the Finance and the Business Change departments at the Institute.

He is a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years’ experience in managing finance, IT, facilities and operations.

In his last role, he was the Director of Finance and Operations at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
